How to Set Up Automatic Backups on Your Hosting

Automatic Backups – How to Set Up Automatic Backups on Your Hosting

In this guide: How to set up automatic backups on your hosting: host backup options, plugin-based backups, off-site storage, and a monthly restore test.

Backups are the one thing every website owner agrees are important — and the thing many forget to set up properly. The solution is automation: configure backups once, verify them regularly, and never rely on memory again.

Why automatic backups

Manual backups fail for predictable reasons:

  • You forget, especially when busy.
  • You back up before a big change but not before small ones that break things.
  • You store the only copy on the same server.

Automatic backups run on a schedule, keep multiple versions, and are ready when disaster strikes — whether it’s a failed update, malware, a hosting issue, or human error. See Website Backups: The 3-2-1 Rule Explained.

Host backup options

Start by understanding what your hosting already provides. Check your control panel and plan details:

  • Frequency: daily, weekly, or on-demand?
  • Retention: how many days or versions are kept?
  • Scope: full account (files, databases, email) or website files only?
  • Storage location: on the same server or a separate system?
  • Restore process: self-service one-click restore or support ticket? Any fees?
  • Download option: can you download backups to store elsewhere?

Common control panel tools:

  • cPanel: “Backup” or “Backup Wizard” for full account or partial backups; many hosts use JetBackup for automated daily backups with restore points.
  • hPanel (Hostinger): Backups section with scheduled backups (frequency depends on plan) and restore options.
  • Plesk: Backup Manager with scheduled backups and remote storage (FTP or cloud) options.
  • Managed WordPress hosts: automatic daily backups plus on-demand restore points.

Tip: create a manual/on-demand backup before every major update, even with automatic backups enabled.

Plugin-based backups

A backup plugin gives you an independent copy stored outside your hosting account.

Setup example with a typical backup plugin:

  1. Install a reputable plugin — see Best Backup Plugins for WordPress Compared.
  2. Set schedules:
    – Database: daily (or every few hours for stores and membership sites).
    – Files: daily or weekly, depending on how often uploads and plugins change.
  3. Choose what to include: plugins, themes, uploads, other wp-content folders, and the database.
  4. Set retention: keep at least 7–14 daily versions, and ideally some weekly/monthly versions.
  5. Connect remote storage (next section).
  6. Enable email notifications for failures.
  7. Run the first backup manually and confirm it completes.

For large sites, choose plugins with incremental backups or services that process backups on their own servers to reduce hosting load.

Off-site storage

Store at least one copy completely separate from your host:

  • Google Drive / Dropbox / OneDrive: easy for small sites.
  • Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, Cloudflare R2: affordable, scalable object storage — great for larger sites and agencies.
  • Plugin vendor clouds: some premium services include their own secure storage.
  • Local copies: occasionally download a full backup to an encrypted external drive or NAS.

Security tips:

  • Use a dedicated storage account or bucket for backups.
  • Enable 2FA on storage accounts.
  • Use least-privilege access keys (write-only access where possible).
  • Consider versioning or object lock (immutability) so backups can’t be deleted by attackers or mistakes.
  • Encrypt backups if they contain sensitive data.

Restore testing

A backup you’ve never restored is only a hope. Test regularly:

Monthly or quarterly:

  1. Create a staging site or temporary environment — see Best Staging Tools for WordPress.
  2. Restore your latest backup (files + database).
  3. Check: homepage, recent posts, images, forms, logins, and (for stores) products and orders.
  4. Time it: how long did the restore take? That’s your realistic recovery time.
  5. Document the steps so anyone on your team can repeat them.

Also verify:

  • ☐ Backups are running on schedule (check dates).
  • ☐ File sizes look reasonable (a sudden drop may mean files are missing).
  • ☐ Notifications are reaching you.

Your automatic backup setup checklist

  • ☐ Host backups enabled and understood.
  • ☐ Plugin or service backups scheduled.
  • ☐ Off-site storage connected and secured.
  • ☐ Retention of at least 7–30 days.
  • ☐ Failure notifications on.
  • ☐ Pre-update manual backups as a habit.
  • ☐ Restore tested this month.
