How to Install WordPress on a Subdomain

Want a separate blog, store, help center, or test site without buying a new domain? A subdomain like blog.yoursite.com or shop.yoursite.com lets you run a completely separate WordPress site under your existing domain. The setup takes about 15 minutes on most hosting plans.

This guide shows how to install WordPress on a subdomain step by step: when it makes sense, creating the subdomain, installing WordPress, adding SSL, and connecting it to your main site.

Good reasons to use a subdomain

  • A separate project with its own design, plugins, and users — for example, a shop or a members area.
  • A staging or test site where you can try updates safely.
  • A different language or region run by a separate team.
  • Isolation: problems on one site don’t affect the other.

If the goal is simply a blog that supports your main site’s SEO, a subdirectory (yoursite.com/blog) is often the better choice, because all your content and backlinks build authority on one site. Learn more in SEO Basics: How Google Ranks Your Website.

Creating the subdomain and DNS record

  1. Log in to your hosting control panel (cPanel, hPanel, Plesk, or similar).
  2. Open Domains → Subdomains (the name varies by panel).
  3. Enter the prefix, for example blog, and choose the parent domain.
  4. Note the document root folder the panel creates, such as public_html/blog or blog.yoursite.com. WordPress will be installed there.
  5. If your DNS is managed by your host, the DNS record is usually created automatically. If your DNS is elsewhere (for example, Cloudflare), add an A record for blog pointing to your hosting IP.

Installing WordPress on it

  1. Open your host’s auto-installer (Softaculous, WordPress Toolkit, or the host’s own installer).
  2. Choose https:// and select the subdomain from the domain list.
  3. Leave the directory field empty so WordPress installs at the root of the subdomain.
  4. Set a site title, a unique admin username, a strong password, and your email.
  5. Click Install and log in at blog.yoursite.com/wp-admin.

Prefer the manual method? The steps are in How to Install WordPress in 5 Minutes — just upload the files to the subdomain’s folder and create a new database.

Adding SSL to the subdomain

  • Most hosts issue a free Let’s Encrypt certificate automatically within minutes. Check the SSL section of your panel.
  • If it doesn’t appear, run AutoSSL or request a certificate for the subdomain manually.
  • Once active, make sure both URLs in Settings → General start with https://.
  • On Cloudflare, set SSL mode to Full (strict) to avoid redirect loops.

Linking it to your main site

  • Add the subdomain to your main site’s navigation or footer so visitors can find it.
  • Use a matching logo, colors, and fonts so it feels like the same brand.
  • Add it to Google Search Console as a separate property and submit its sitemap.
  • Remember it’s a separate WordPress install: it needs its own updates, security plugin, and backups.

Key takeaways

  • Create the subdomain in your hosting panel first.
  • Install WordPress into the subdomain’s own folder, with an empty directory field.
  • Activate free SSL and use https in both site URLs.
  • Treat it as a separate site for SEO, updates, and backups.
