In this guide: On-page SEO checklist to optimize every blog post: titles, meta descriptions, URLs, headings, content quality, images, alt text, and internal and external…
You don’t need to be an SEO expert to optimize a blog post. You need a repeatable checklist. Run through these steps before hitting “Publish,” and every article you write will have a stronger chance of ranking.
Titles and meta descriptions
Title tag (SEO title)
- ☐ Includes the focus keyword, ideally near the beginning.
- ☐ Clearly describes the benefit or answer.
- ☐ Is roughly 50–60 characters so it isn’t cut off in search results.
- ☐ Is unique — no two pages share the same title.
- ☐ Uses numbers or the year when relevant (“15 Plugins,” “2026”) to increase clicks.
Meta description
- ☐ Summarizes the page in about 140–160 characters.
- ☐ Includes the keyword naturally (Google bolds matching terms).
- ☐ Includes a benefit and a reason to click.
- ☐ Is unique for every page.
Google sometimes rewrites descriptions, but a good one still improves click-through rates. See How to Write Meta Titles and Descriptions That Get Clicks.
URLs and headings
URL (slug)
- ☐ Short, readable, and lowercase.
- ☐ Contains the main keyword.
- ☐ Uses hyphens between words.
- ☐ Avoids dates and unnecessary words (so you can update the post later).
Example: /speed-up-wordpress/ beats /2026/10/08/how-to-make-your-wordpress-website-faster-today/.
Headings
- ☐ One H1 — usually the post title.
- ☐ H2s for main sections; H3s for sub-points.
- ☐ Headings describe the section clearly (they help skimmers and search engines).
- ☐ Some headings include keyword variations naturally.
- ☐ Logical order — don’t skip from H2 to H4.
Content quality and length
- ☐ Matches search intent — the format and angle of the top-ranking results.
- ☐ Answers the main question early in the post.
- ☐ Covers the important subtopics and related questions.
- ☐ Includes original value: experience, examples, screenshots, data, or opinions.
- ☐ Uses the focus keyword and variations naturally (no keyword stuffing).
- ☐ Short paragraphs, bullet points, and tables for readability.
- ☐ Accurate and up to date; cite sources for facts.
- ☐ Has a clear call to action.
- ☐ Shows who wrote it — author bio with relevant experience builds trust.
Length: there’s no ideal word count. Write as much as needed to fully answer the query — compare with top results and aim to be more helpful, not just longer.
Images and alt text
- ☐ Featured image that represents the topic (and looks good when shared on social media).
- ☐ Images are compressed and in modern formats (WebP/AVIF).
- ☐ Descriptive file names:
on-page-seo-checklist.webp.
- ☐ Alt text describes each image for screen readers and search engines. Include keywords only when they naturally describe the image.
- ☐ Width and height set to prevent layout shifts.
See How to Optimize Images for the Web.
Internal and external links
Internal links
- ☐ Link to 2–5 related articles on your site using descriptive anchor text.
- ☐ Link to relevant service or product pages where helpful.
- ☐ Go back to older posts and add links to this new one.
Internal links help search engines discover content, spread authority, and keep readers on your site.
External links
- ☐ Link to authoritative sources for statistics, studies, or official documentation.
- ☐ Use
rel="sponsored" for affiliate or paid links and rel="nofollow" or rel="ugc" where appropriate.
- ☐ Check that all links work.
Final checks before publishing
- ☐ Preview on mobile.
- ☐ Assign the right category and tags.
- ☐ Add schema if relevant (FAQ, How-to, Article) — see How to Add Schema Markup.
- ☐ Set the social preview (Open Graph image and title).
- ☐ Proofread one last time.
After publishing
- ☐ Request indexing in Google Search Console (optional for new posts).
- ☐ Share on social media and your newsletter.
- ☐ Track rankings and clicks in Search Console after a few weeks.
- ☐ Update the post when information changes.
