In this guide: How to add schema markup to WordPress: what structured data is, common schema types, adding schema with plugins or manually, and testing with Google’s tools.
Search results today are more than blue links. You see star ratings, FAQs, breadcrumbs, product prices, event dates, and recipe details. Much of this comes from schema markup — structured data that helps search engines understand your content.
Schema markup is code (usually in JSON-LD format) that describes the meaning of your content using the shared vocabulary from Schema.org.
For example, instead of search engines guessing that “4.8” on your page is a rating, schema explicitly says: this product has an aggregate rating of 4.8 from 120 reviews.
Benefits:
Important: schema doesn’t guarantee rich results, and it’s not a direct ranking boost. It makes your content eligible and easier to understand. Google also changes which rich results it shows over time — for example, it has limited FAQ and HowTo rich results for most sites in recent years — so focus on schema that fits your content accurately.
Common types for websites:
The easiest method for most WordPress users.
SEO plugins
WooCommerce
Dedicated schema plugins
Block-based FAQs and HowTos
Avoid duplicates: if your theme, SEO plugin, and a schema plugin all output Article or Product schema, you may create conflicting data. Use one primary source.
For custom needs, you can add JSON-LD directly — for example, via a code snippets plugin or your child theme.
Example LocalBusiness schema:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LocalBusiness",
"name": "Example Web Studio",
"url": "https://example.com",
"logo": "https://example.com/logo.png",
"telephone": "+966-5X-XXX-XXXX",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "King Fahd Road",
"addressLocality": "Riyadh",
"addressCountry": "SA"
},
"openingHours": "Su-Th 09:00-18:00"
}
</script>
Rules for manual schema:
Fix errors (required fields missing) first; warnings are optional improvements.
